Annual School Uniform Drive

Providing uniforms to students in need so every child can walk into school with confidence and focus entirely on learning.

About the Uniform Drive

In 2015, ARK launched its Annual Uniform and School Supplies Drive to support homeless youth attending DC Public (DCPS) and Charter Schools. After conducting a needs assessment, we discovered that many homeless students were arriving at school in dirty uniforms  or without a uniform at all.

DCPS policy requires students to wear uniforms daily. Code B2408.2(c)(1) and (d)(1) further states that "excessively dirty and/or torn clothing may not be worn in school." For students already facing instability at home, this policy can become a barrier to simply showing up.

Through our Uniform Drive, ARK eliminates that barrier  so students can focus 100% on academic success.

There is a large flat-screen television on the wall displaying 'WELCOME TO THE GATHERING SPOT.' The room has a modern design with a textured gray wall, wooden shelving, and black ceiling slats with hanging light fixtures.

Why this Matters

Ten years ago, ARK launched the Uniform Drive after seeing firsthand how something as basic as a clean uniform could stand between a child and their education. Homeless and low-income students deserve to walk into school with the same dignity as their peers. By providing essential uniform items, we help remove barriers and empower students to show up — ready to learn.
